Over more than two decades in commercial real estate, I’ve built a career on seeing opportunities where others see complexity, and turning ideas into tangible results. The content I share on this page is not a travel diary or a personal highlight reel; it’s the result of studying markets, engaging with top leaders, and testing ideas in the real world—insights I bring forward to encourage conversation of how our industry can think bigger, act smarter, and be more impactful.

My career is grounded in accomplishments and inspired by possibilities. These selected projects demonstrate this mindset in action.
Sometimes leadership means literally that—serving as Chair of North America’s preeminent commercial real estate association. It also shows up in projects like Emerald Hills Shopping Centre, where I encouraged the team to push past industry norms and embrace innovation. The project earned Best Shopping Centre in North America at the International Property Awards and was an ICSC Awards finalist.
I once walked past a couple of empty parking lots in a small Canadian city and thought, “what if…” Years later, that vision became Edmonton’s ICE District—an NHL arena, condos, offices, and vibrant social spaces. I brokered the original land acquisition and was part of the initial development team, helping transform a simple idea into a city-defining hub.
Industrial projects are complex and reflect the sophisticated needs of modern users. From overseeing infrastructure and zoning at the 110-acre Monarch Business Park to leading lease-up and strategic site dispositions at the 92-acre Northwest Business Park, my hands-on involvement ensures projects move efficiently, profitably, and in alignment with strategic objectives.
“Leadership is bestowed… it is earned and given by others." Marc Selvitelli, President & CEO, NAIOP

Leadership is bestowed upon someone; it is earned and given by others. NAIOP’s 22,000+ members recognized Alex’s leadership potential and elected him as the association’s 2025 chair. He earned this role through a forward-thinking approach and a strong aptitude to unify diverse perspectives. He displayed his unique ability to coalesce passionate and disparate views when he successfully shepherded the association through a difficult conversation about its brand. His leadership clearly left a meaningful impact on NAIOP and the broader commercial real estate industry.

As a major Western Canadian developer, we retained Alex Thomson for his expertise and nationwide connections. He identified and evaluated acquisition opportunities in new markets, and provided clear recommendations on our industrial land holdings. Alex also created connections with potential purchasers that helped advance our development goals. His ability to combine deep technical knowledge with market insight made him a trusted and effective advisor.

As Co-Chair of the Developing Leaders group for NAIOP NYC Metro, I’ve seen how Alex engages with younger professionals and brings them into the conversation with equal respect. He has a rare ability to bridge generations — offering vision and wisdom from his experience while also encouraging and empowering new voices in the industry. That inclusiveness is a hallmark of his leadership.

Alex is a tremendous thought partner and leader. During the development of our NAIOP 3-year strategic plan, he was instrumental in guiding group progress while remaining open to incorporating new but important ideas into the process to create a cohesive and inclusive plan.

Through his leadership within NAIOP, Alex Thomson has shown a rare combination of vision and collaboration. He brings people together across markets and perspectives, always focusing on practical outcomes that advance the industry. His integrity and thoughtful approach have earned him the respect of senior leaders in Canada and beyond.

As the Chair of NAIOP, Alex Thomson has brought clarity, professionalism, and strategic insight to our government relations efforts. He engages effectively with stakeholders and can frame industry priorities in ways that resonate with decision-makers. His leadership is trusted and respected within NAIOP and with all those we engage.

Alex Thomson brings a genuine understanding of chapter needs and a passion for connecting them with NAIOP’s national vision. His engaging and approachable style makes members feel heard, and his leadership strengthens the bond between chapters and the broader association.
